Sunday

The first day of workcamp didn’t consist of much work, but it was still very eventful. We left FCCB around 12:30 and arrived at the Pescadero Community Church around 3. When the first two cars arrived at the church we were informed that one of the vans carrying the school supplies as well as three youth and an adult leader broke down due to transmission malfunctions.

After we had ferried the supplies from the bro

ken van to the church we all claimed our sleeping ‘spots’ in the sanctuary. Within the hour migrant farm workers arrived to eat the meal that Puente provides for the twice a week. At this time, these workers taught the youth and some leaders how to play dominoes. After many rounds of dominoes, we were given the privilege of hearing some of their life stories. We learned that some of them have many children and family members living in Mexico whom they have not seen for five or more years. Hearing these stories made us feel grateful that we have caring communities and close connections with our families.

Following dinner, the Spiritual Committee led the group through an art project. We were told to paint our emotions/ feelings about the first night of workcamp. Some of these paintings will be included in this blog post.

Between our reflection and lights out, we had a few hours to play games and relax. A select few of us decided to play football in the parking lot while others decided to catch up in the sanctuary. When it was dark, the recreation committee hosted a game of Spotlight in the sanctuary, which includes hiding in the dark without being seen with the flashlight.

Its time for us to get into bed so that Adam can tell us a bedtime story. We hope the rest of our week here in Pescadero is as gratifying as it was today.

Alex and Sita signing off.
